Warnings

WARNING: the compressor does not break down by itself.

It is therefore essential to understand the causes of its malfunction before replacing it with a new or reconditioned unit in order to avoid a repeat failure.

The general causes are:

The relay is not replaced and the compressor keeps running until it seizes; always replace the relay.

Even a very small hole in the air spring, in the height adjustment valves or in the system will cause the system to leak and the compressor to activate more than necessary to restore pressure; the larger the hole, the faster the system will discharge. Therefore carefully check that there are no leaks of any kind.

The compressor draws ambient air through an intake hose which in most cases is fitted with a filter. If this hose or the filter are damaged the compressor may inhale debris, dust and water, resulting in internal breakage and corrosion of the piston and cylinder. Therefore check that the hose and filter are intact and dry internally.

Techinical Info

The air compressor with code OE 1643201204 is installed on various Mercedes-Benz models equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension. The original manufacturer (OEM) is AMK Automotive, a German company leading in the production of air suspension systems. This component has been used as original equipment on Mercedes vehicles since 2005, such as the M-Class W164, GL X164, and R W251.

Compatible aftermarket manufacturers

In addition to the OEM version, numerous compatible aftermarket alternatives are available with code 1643201204, all designed to guarantee perfect interchangeability with the original, such as Arnott.

It is essential to always verify the OEM code 1643201204 to ensure full compatibility.

Technical specifications

  • Type: electromechanical piston compressor, powered at 12V.
  • Function: generates pressure to inflate the air springs and maintain the vehicle's ride height.
  • Operating pressure: typically 13–15 bar; maximum pressure up to 20 bar.
  • Electrical consumption: approximately 30 A, with a dedicated fuse of 40 A.
  • Thermal protection: automatic shutdown after continuous operation (about 90 seconds).
  • Approximate dimensions: about 33×21×20 cm; weight 4,5–5 kg.
  • Compatibility: integrated into the AIRMATIC system and compatible with versions featuring the ADS (Adaptive Damping System).

The compressor includes an integrated dryer, exhaust valve, and activation relay, and is designed to operate intermittently, supported by an accumulation tank.

Vehicle applications

Mercedes

  • M-Class
  • GL-Class
  • R-Class

DIPA recommends always verifying the compatibility of the spare part before purchase.

Typical defects

Overload due to air leaks: premature wear caused by leaks in the bellows or fittings, resulting in excessive compressor operation.

Ingress of moisture/dirt: infiltrations causing internal corrosion and piston seizure.

Mechanical wear: performance degradation, increased noise, and prolonged activation time.

Damaged anti-vibration mounts: transmission of vibrations to the chassis.

Electrical faults: relay problems, blown fuse, or damaged wiring.

Important: before replacing the compressor, it is essential to eliminate all causes of failure, particularly any air leaks. It is recommended to always replace the relay together with the compressor.

Conclusions

DIPA offers a wide range of spare parts: from original to aftermarket parts selected among the best manufacturers on the market. Not only that: it also offers reconditioned components with performance equivalent to new, providing savings on replacement and contributing to environmental protection through circular economy. If the spare part you need is not available, don’t worry: DIPA can recondition your part "on demand," restoring full functionality and safety in a short time.
